Veg Among the Heathens

I started this blog years ago, in response to my son's Declaration of Vegetarianism. It was just to post recipes/essays/music/pictures. In its new incarnation, it will be an odd conglomeration of political recipes, delicious essays, and links to home-cooked music.

Gila Remembers

Music Video Gila Remembers

Lyrics and music

Original Post regarding the song

Two years ago I fell in love with a river. She's the Gila, wild and free. With power and a geologic patience she shapes the wilderness and brings life to southwestern New Mexico.

This List has been Officially Sanctioned by Tango Hombre and Grace O'Malley

Top 10 Items to Feed Your Dog When Your Husband Isn't Looking

  • Mozzarella
  • Soupçon of chicken broth on the kibble
  • Eggs: scrambled, poached, fried, as many as possible
  • Chicken skins
  • Easy Cheese
  • Chips (skip the salsa)
  • Steak, cook rare
  • Carrots (no kidding)
  • Ice cubes
  • Liver
The problem is all inside your head, he said to me
Liver is delicious, if you eat it logically.
I said I appreciate that. But I have to disagree
There must be fifty ways to leave your liver...

Top 10 ways to leave your liver

  • Slip out the back, Jack
  • Make a new plan, Stan
  • Leave it on the plate, Nate
  • Feed it to your Man, Nan
  • Serve it to the Cat, Pat
  • Send it off to sea, Lee
  • Throw it down the hill, Bill
  • Put it in the trash, Dash
  • Leave it to its fate, Kate
  • Toss it to the Doggie, Augie

Oprah's Top Ten Herbs and Spices for the Fledgling Cook

  • Bay leaf
  • Basil
  • Thyme
  • Kosher salt
  • Dill
  • Rosemary
  • Cumin
  • Black peppercorns (with a grinder)
  • Nutmeg (whole with grater)
  • Cinnamon

So you ask yourself, does Oprah really sanction this list? Well, no. Of course not. But my ultra cool hipster son Max says if I want someone, anyone, to actually read my blog someday, it will have to include "top ten" lists and Oprah. So I'm doing my best. In case you’re curious, my search on Oprah images just pulled up 9,460,000 pictures.

About this blog.

My photo
Bette Korber
This started out as a recipe blog. If you were in my kitchen, we would be cooking together, sharing music and conversation. My recipes attempt to do just that across the ether, and so each recipe comes with some music, some conversation, and a picture or two. For main dishes there was often a meat version and meatless version that I could make in parallel, for my fine sons Sky and Max (who tend towards Veg) and who eat Among the Heathens (that would be the rest of us). My recipe blog has morphed more recently into a place that harbors notes about my music and links to music videos, and some essays.
